THE PHYSICORE STANDARD

A common language for machine performance.

Availability, intervention and failure mean different things to different suppliers. The Physicore Standard defines them, along with the evidence and operating context required to turn an individual observation into a comparable record.

MEASUREMENT SCOPE

The work performed, not the machine state.

A powered-on machine is not necessarily producing useful work. The Standard separates productive activity from idle and interrupted time, records completed output, and connects performance losses to the conditions in which they occur.

Every measure requires a defined task, an observation period and a stated operating context.

DEFINITIONS

Comparable results require comparable definitions.

A performance figure states what was measured, over what period, under which conditions, and how the result was calculated.

Planned operating timeThe agreed period during which the machine is expected to perform the defined work, with exclusions established in advance.
Productive timeTime during which the machine is actively completing the defined work.
Idle timeTime when the machine is available but not performing productive work.
Interrupted timeTime when an unplanned event prevents the machine from performing the defined work.
Operational availabilityAvailable time divided by planned operating time, with the treatment of planned exclusions stated.
ThroughputAccepted completed work divided by the stated observation period.
Intervention rateRecorded human interventions divided by the stated task count or observation period.
Recovery timeTime from the defined interruption event to the defined return-to-operation state.
Cost per unit of workAgreed operating cost inputs divided by accepted completed output.

A throughput figure measured per productive hour is not interchangeable with one measured per scheduled hour. The calculation basis stays explicit.

MEASUREMENT METHOD

A record that can be examined.

The method depends on the machine and the operating environment. Fixed observation, available equipment data, condition sensing and aerial measurement each contribute where appropriate. The method preserves the evidence needed to understand how a result was produced.

    Consistent definitions applied to productive, idle and interrupted time, interventions and recovery.

COMPARABILITY

The same measure is not always the same comparison.

Performance depends on the task, machine configuration, workload and operating conditions. A valid comparison accounts for those differences rather than treating every machine or site as interchangeable. The Standard retains the measurement basis and relevant context alongside every result.

The volume, mix and difficulty of the work.

The conditions under which the machine operates.

The observation period, definitions and calculation method.

EVIDENCE AND GOVERNANCE

The record states its own limits.

A performance result is more useful when its measurement basis is clear. The Standard retains the context required to interpret a result, identify incomplete observation, and separate what was measured from what was assumed.

Limitations
Missing data, uncertain classification, and conditions affecting interpretation.
Data handling
The information required for measurement, its permitted use, and the retention arrangements appropriate to the deployment.
